Getting Started

Signing Up:

To sign up for People's Cancer Network you must fill out the Basic Information and the Cancer Information sections. You can start here.

Basic Information:

The Basic Information is used to help others identify you. Your e-mail address is used to log in and is needed for you to connect with others and have them connect with you. Your Date of Birth and Gender are used when searching for others. Your Zip Code will be used to help you find Events and Groups. Your private information will never be sold or distributed to a third party.

For security reasons, you must properly fill out the Verification Code, and confirm that you’ve read the Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.

Cancer Information:

The information you input into the Cancer Information section will be used in your profile, as well as to help you connect and communicate with other users on People’s Cancer Network.

The Cancer Information is one of the most important parts of People’s Cancer Network. It was developed by oncologists and medical personnel with over 100 years of direct cancer clinical care. These carefully thought of questions regarding how you are affected by cancer is what makes us unique in our ability to introduce you to others with similar circumstances or interests.

Your Cancer Information will be used to automatically match you with other users who share a similar situation to yours.

Please fill out as much as you can.

Please select how cancer has affected you

We have broken down how people are affected by cancer into 3 categories.
You can select more than one category, and input multiple diagnoses inside each category. You must fill out all of the information for each category you enter.

I Have, Had, or May Have Cancer

Select I Have, Had, or May Have Cancer if you are the person with either has, had, or may have cancer.

If you have selected I Have, Had, or May Have Cancer, two options will appear - I Have or Had Cancer and I May Have Cancer. The I Have or Had Cancer option is for users who have received a definitive medical diagnosis of cancer. The I May Have Cancer option is for users who were told they may have cancer, but are awaiting definitive diagnosis of cancer.

I Have or Had Cancer:

Once you've selected I Have or Had Cancer, multiple fields will appear:

Type of Cancer I Have or Had – Begin typing the cancer diagnosis and the auto-fill textbox will assist you in finding and inputting your cancer type. If the cancer you type in is not listed on our site, an information box will pop-up. Within that box, you can click the List of All of Our Cancers link to view a list of all of the cancers on our site, or a link to proceed with your cancer marked as Not Listed. Please try to find the cancer that best describes what you are looking for.

Once you’ve selected I May Have Cancer, three checkboxes will appear under the Type of Cancer heading, as well as an auto-fill cancer textbox:

I am not sure what type of cancer I have or had – Check this box if you are unsure what type of cancer you have or had, or if you are unsure where the cancer originated.
Date of Diagnosis – Input the month, day, and year that you were diagnosed with cancer.
Cancer Status – There are six options to choose from. Please choose your current cancer status. Please check all types of treatment that you received or plan on having in the Undergoing Treatment - First Time option, the Undergoing Treatment - Retreatment option, or the Finished Treatment option.

  1. Awaiting Treatment Plans – you have been diagnosed with cancer but are awaiting treatment plans from your doctor
  2. Undergoing Treatment - First Time – you are currently undergoing treatment - please fill in all types of treatment you have had or are planning to have
  3. Undergoing Treatment - Retreatment – you are currently undergoing retreatment - please fill in all types of treatment you have had or are planning to have
  4. Finished Treatment – you have completed your treatment- please fill in all types of treatment you have had
  5. No Planned Treatment – you have been diagnosed with cancer but your doctor does not plan treatment
  6. Foregoing Recommended Treatment – you have been diagnosed with cancer but you are not going to follow your treatment plan

Check any of the following that apply – We have listed some special circumstances regarding cancer - please check all that apply.

  1. Under Hospice care – You are currently under Hospice care
  2. On Protocol, Study, or Trial – You are currently participating in a protocol, study, or trial
  3. Inpatient in Hospital – you are currently an inpatient in a hospital
  4. Metastasis – Your cancer has spread (you have metastatic cancer)
  5. Considering holding or stopping treatment – you are currently undergoing treatment, but you are considering holding or stopping the planned treatment

When you have inputted all of your information, please press Save and continue with the registration.

I May Have Cancer

Once you’ve selected I May Have Cancer, an auto-fill textbox and checkbox will appear:
Type of Cancer I May Have – Begin typing the cancer diagnosis and the auto-fill textbox will assist you in finding and inputting your cancer type. If the cancer you type in is not listed on our site, an information box will pop-up. Within that box, you can click the List of All of Our Cancers link to view a list of all of the cancers on our site, or a link to proceed with your cancer marked as Not Listed. Please try to find the cancer that best describes what you are looking for.
I am not sure what type of cancer I may have – Check this box if you are unsure what type of cancer you may have, or if you are unsure where the cancer originated.

When you have inputted all of your information, please press Save and continue with the registration.
Remember please finish each section before you add another category.

I Support Someone With Cancer:

Select I Support Someone With Cancer if you are either a family member, significant other, friend, caretaker, co-worker, neighbor, medical personnel, or interested person.

Once you’ve selected I Support Someone With Cancer, three fields and a check box will appear:

I Support My – Select from the I Support My drop down menu how you are related to the person who has cancer. For example, if your mother has been diagnosed with cancer, select “Mother” from the drop down menu.

Type Of Cancer – Begin typing the cancer diagnosis and the auto-fill textbox will assist you in finding and inputting your cancer type. If the cancer you type in is not listed on our site, an information box will pop-up. Within that box, you can click the List of All of Our Cancers link to view a list of all of the cancers on our site, or a link to proceed with your cancer marked as Not Listed. Please try to find the cancer that best describes what you are looking for.

I am not sure what type of cancer they have – Check this box if you are unsure what type of cancer the person you support has, or if you are unsure where the cancer originated.

Year Diagnosed – Select the year the person who you know that has cancer was diagnosed.

If you select a certain family member from the I Support My list, three new fields will appear under the Are You Genetically Predisposed to Cancer? heading. Please do not fill out any of the predisposition information if you are not genetically predisposed to cancer:

I am genetically predisposed to cancer - I have tested positive for a gene to cancer - You have tested positive for a gene to cancer.

I may be genetically predisposed to cancer but have not been tested - You suspected you may be genetically predisposed for a gene to cancer but you have not been tested to confirm that you are.

I may be genetically predisposed to cancer but WILL NOT be tested - You may be genetically predisposed for a gene to cancer but you will not be tested to confirm that you are.

Please do not fill out any of the predisposition information if you are not genetically predisposed to cancer.

You can add multiple people who you are supporting, but you need to fill out each section for each cancer.

Once you’ve inputted all of the information, press the Save button

I Lost Someone

Select I Lost Someone if you have lost someone to cancer.
Once you’ve selected I Lost Someone, three fields will appear:

I Lost My – Select from the I Lost My drop down menu how you are related to the person who you lost to cancer. For example, if you lost your mother to cancer, select “Mother” from the drop down menu.

Type of Cancer – Begin typing the cancer diagnosis and the auto-fill textbox will assist you in finding and inputting your cancer type. If the cancer you type in is not listed on our site, an information box will pop-up. Within that box, you can click the List of All of Our Cancers link to view a list of all of the cancers on our site, or a link to proceed with your cancer marked as Not Listed. Please try to find the cancer that best describes what you are looking for.

I am not sure what type of cancer they had – Check this box if you are unsure what type of cancer the person you lost had, or if you are unsure where the cancer originated.

Year of Loss - Select the year that the person you have lost passed away.

If you select a certain family member from the I Lost Someone list, three new fields will appear under the Are You Genetically Predisposed to Cancer heading. Please do not fill out any of the predisposition information if you are not genetically predisposed to cancer:

I am genetically predisposed to cancer - I have tested positive for a gene to cancer - You have tested positive for a gene to cancer.

I may be genetically predisposed to cancer but have not been tested - You suspected you may be genetically predisposed for a gene to cancer but you have not been tested to confirm that you are.

I may be genetically predisposed to cancer but WILL NOT be tested - You may be genetically predisposed for a gene to cancer but you will not be tested to confirm that you are.

You can add multiple people who you have lost to cancer.
Once you’ve inputted all of the information, press the Save button.

Who Are You Looking For:

The information entered into the Looking For section will be used to help connect you with other users who are in situations of your choosing.

The information that you input into the Looking For section of the site will be matched with users who fit the criteria that you input, and will automatically match you through the Cancer Connection section of People's Cancer Network.

Setting Your Preferences

The preferences you set in the Who You Are Looking For section will allow People's Cancer Network to automatically match you with users who are in a similar situation as you.

Check the box next to Someone With Any of the Cancers I Have box if you would like to be automatically matched with people who have any of the cancers that you have.

Check the box next to Someone Who is Similar in Who They Support if you would like to be matched with someone who is similar in who they support.

Check the box next to Someone Who is Similar in Who They Lost if you would like to be matched with someone who is similar in who they lost.

Check the box next to Someone Predisposed to Cancer if you would like to be matched with people who are predisposed to cancer.

If you would like to be matched with a specific gender, select that gender from the Gender drop down box.

If you would like to be matched with people from a specific age range, select the minimum age and maximum age from the Age Range drop down boxes.

Once you have inputted all of your preferences, press the Save Preferences button.

If you would like to view your Cancer Connections, press the View My Cancer Connections button.

Click the Advanced Search button if you would like to set specific filters to search for other users. Within the Advanced Search section of the site, you will be able to search for users with specific cancers, cancer statuses, multiple cancers, cancer treatments, diagnosis dates, users who support people affected by cancers, users who have lost people to cancer, users who are predisposed to cancer, and more.

Completing Your Profile

Once you have completed the registration process, click on the Edit button in the top right and corner of People's Cancer Network to complete your profile. The first three tabs - Basic Information, Cancer Information, and Who You Are Looking For were already completed during the sign-up process. If there are any changes to any of those sections, you can edit them by clicking on the corresponding link.

Completing your profile by filling out all of the information in each of the categories listed below will help other users who you connect with get to know you better.

Volunteering

If you are willing to volunteer in assisting other users who are in need of help, check the boxes of the type of assistance you are offering and People's Cancer Network will match you with users who are in need of your services.

People's Cancer Network will automatically match you with users in need of the assistance you are offering to volunteer with who live within 25 miles of your zip code

If there is something that you are willing to volunteer for that isn't listed, please click the Make a Suggestion link and submit how you are willing to volunteer.

Once you've entered all of your information, press the Save Changes button.

Need Assistance

If you are in need of assistance from other users who are offering to volunteer, check the boxes of the type of assistance you are in need of and People's Cancer Network will match you with users who are willing to volunteer.

People's Cancer Network will automatically match you with users who are offering to volunteer with the things you need assistance with who live within 25 miles of your zip code.

If there is something that you need assistance with that isn't listed, please click the Make a Suggestion link and submit what you need assistance with.

Once you've entered all of your information, press the Save Changes button.

About Me

There are two fields in the About Me page of the Edit section.
The About Me textbox is where you can tell about yourself. Please write about yourself so other users can get to know you better.
The My Cancer Journey textbox is where you can tell about your cancer story. Whether you have or may have cancer, you supporter someone, or lost someone to cancer, you can tell your connections about how cancer has affected you.
Once you've entered all of your information, press the Save Changes button.

Hobbies & Interests

The Hobbies & Interests page in the Edit section is comprised of five fields:

Hobbies & Interests - Share your general hobbies and interests

Favorite Books - List your favorite books

Favorite Music - List your favorite musicians, albums, or songs

Favorite TV Shows - List your favorite television shows

Favorite Movies - List your favorite movies

Once you've entered all of your information, press the Save Changes button.

Education & Employment

There are two fields in the Education & Employment page of the Edit section.
The Employment Information section of the page is comprised of two fields:

Employer Name - Enter the name of the employer or company who you work for

Employment Position - Enter your current position at your place of employment

The Education Information section of the page is comprised of three fields:

School Type Dropdown Menu - Select the type of school you attended from the dropdown menu

School Name - Enter the name of the school that you attended

What Did You Study - Enter the focus or concentration of what you studied

Once you've entered all of your information, press the Save Changes button.

My Photo

The photo uploaded to the My Photo page of the Edit section will be displayed as your profile photo.

To upload a photo on the My Photo page, click the Choose File button under the heading Select a Profile Picture. Once you click that button, browse through your computer to locate the picture that you would like to display as your profile photo. Your photo will automatically be resized to fit the profile photo dimensions.

Once you've successfully uploaded a photo, you must check the box under the Certify Ownership Of Image heading.
Press the Save New Profile Photo button and your photo will be uploaded and displayed on your profile.
